This policy explains how Japanese Immersion (the App) handles personal information and data. The same policy applies to the web version and future iOS and Android versions.
1. Accounts
The App does not require account registration or login, and does not ask you to register your name or email. For payments in the web version, an email address and other information are sent to Stripe for payment processing; see section 6.
An exception applies when you transfer an existing subscription to another device or browser. A verification code is sent to your email to confirm that it is yours before matching the subscription. When matching is completed, the verification record is deleted immediately. If you request a code but stop before completing the process, that record may remain for a time; see section 6.
2. Data stored on your device
The following are saved only on your device, in browser localStorage or the operating system’s app storage, and are not automatically sent to the operator’s server: time spent in Japanese and days returned; text and photos in words you noticed, copying and exploration; dictation and similar records; app settings and locally recorded subscription status.
3. Community data stored on the server
Community (‘ひろば’) posts — text, images, stamps and comments — are stored on the Supabase cloud database used by the App and can be viewed by other users. The nickname and flag set in ‘わたし’, if any, are also stored with posts and shown to other users. Posts can be deleted in the App. Avoid including information that identifies you personally.
4. Speech generation
The App prioritises human narration and audio files generated in advance for conversation spaces, dictation, shadowing and similar features. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech is used only for text without those recordings, and the text needed to generate speech is sent to Google’s servers through the operator’s Cloudflare Workers relay. Generated audio is temporarily cached on your device.
5. Information sent to third parties for AI features
When you use AI features such as speech transcription or AI conversation, the text you enter or audio you record is sent, to the extent needed for processing, to OpenAI for text generation and Whisper transcription, or Google Cloud for Text-to-Speech.
All communication passes through the operator’s Cloudflare Workers relay. The relay protects API keys and does not retain or use transmitted data for unrelated purposes. Each provider processes data according to its own privacy policy. The App does not send photos or images to AI providers; photo processing is performed on your device.
6. Payments and subscription verification
Web purchases are processed by Stripe. Stripe handles card details, email addresses and other payment information; the App operator does not receive your full card number. Stripe’s policy is at https://stripe.com/jp/privacy.
Payments in future mobile versions will be handled by the App Store or Google Play, with payment information handled by Apple or Google. Subscription status is checked and recorded by the operator’s relay server to manage cancellation and resumption.
When a subscription is transferred to another device or browser, Supabase is used to verify email ownership, separately from its use to store community posts. The temporary email record is deleted immediately after subscription matching is completed. If only a code is requested and the process is abandoned, the record may remain.
7. Notifications
Local reminders are scheduled only if you enable the gentle reminder feature. They do not send personal data to an external service. This feature is available only in future iOS and Android versions; the web version does not send notifications. Reminders are not used to enforce streaks or pressure you to return.
8. Cookies and tracking
The web version uses Cookiebot, supplied by Cybot A/S, for consent management. Its CookieConsent cookie remembers your consent choice and is not used for behavioural tracking or advertising.
The App does not set cookies for behavioural tracking or advertising. Cloudflare Web Analytics is used to collect aggregate statistics such as page views without cookies or other device-stored identifiers, and not for the purpose of tracking individuals. Cloudflare’s policy is at https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/.
On Stripe Checkout, Stripe may set essential cookies for fraud prevention and session management.
App dramas and website video samples use Vimeo’s embedded player with Do Not Track enabled, so cookies are not used to track viewing. Vimeo may nevertheless set cookies required to prevent unauthorised access or provide playback. Vimeo’s policy is at https://vimeo.com/privacy.
The cookie list, including classification, retention periods and providers, is available at the end of the App’s web Privacy Policy screen. Web consent choices can be changed or withdrawn from the cookie settings option in the App’s settings.
Separately from cookies, device-local storage holds your records, settings, trial-state information and an anonymous identifier. Cookiebot does not manage this storage. It is needed to provide the App’s functions and is not used for behavioural tracking or advertising. See section 9 for deletion.
9. Retention and deletion
Device data: the ‘delete all records’ option in settings deletes the App’s local data except the anonymous identifier linking the device to a purchase, since deleting that identifier would make an active subscription inaccessible. Deleting browser site data or uninstalling a mobile version also deletes local data. The export and restore option lets you save or move your records in a file, with the destination chosen by you.
Community posts: you can delete them in the App at any time. After cancellation, server-stored posts, images, stamps and comments are deleted when the subscription period ends. If you wish to leave during an active period, contact the operator for prompt deletion.
Payment records: Stripe may retain records for periods required by tax or other laws.
Email verification: a temporary Supabase record is created only when transferring a subscription. It is deleted immediately after matching is completed, but may remain if you request a code and abandon the process. Contact the operator in section 13 if you wish to have it deleted.
10. Children
The App is not designed specifically for children of a particular age. Use by minors under a guardian’s supervision is recommended. In Japan, a minor’s application for a paid service generally requires consent from a person with parental authority.
11. International transfers
The relay and analytics provider Cloudflare, AI processors such as Google Cloud and OpenAI, and video provider Vimeo may use servers outside Japan, mainly in the United States. By using the App, you are deemed to agree to the transfer of personal information to those countries.
12. Changes
This policy may be updated as needed. Important changes will be announced in the App and at public URLs.
